Barry Moran hangs up his Mayo GAA boots:

July 18, 2018

Barry Moran has brought the curtain down on his inter county career. Barry was an integral part of Mayo Senior football for a total of fourteen years.

His inter county career started as a minor in 2004 against Galway in MacHale Park and he stood out that day, so much so that he was drafted into the Mayo U-21 team that year. He lined out at midfield against Kildare in the All Ireland U-21 Semi Final. Mayo beat Kildare and went on to play Armagh in that year’s All Ireland Final where Barry scored a goal.

Barry went on to play a pivotal part in Mayo’s All Ireland U-21 win over Cork in 2006. In total he won 1 All Ireland U-21 title and 3 Connacht U-21 medals with Mayo.

He made his senior debut in 2005 against Roscommon. He played a total of 71 games for the Mayo Senior team. He scored a total of 5 goals and 21 points and won 6 Connacht Senior Titles and played in 4 All Ireland Finals. With 14 years’ service to the Green and Red, he is the longest serving Castlebar Mitchels player to the Mayo cause.

As well as playing midfield, Barry could play full forward, and in later years he played the role of sweeper particularly well, as seen in his performances against Donegal and Tipperary. He won a number of Man-of-the Match awards and in 2012 he was an All Star nominee.

Injury hampered Barry throughout his career and last year he succumbed to a serious Achilles injury. Despite his injury setbacks, Barry must count himself unlucky not to have featured more than the 71 times for his county as senior level for various reasons.

Like so many other great Mayo players of the last decade, All Ireland glory has eluded Barry at senior level. He has, however, served his county with distinction and he has left a legacy of great memories.

Barry is moving to France to take up the position of Finance Director with Allergan Pharmaceuticals, France. All at Castlebar Mitchels wish Barry and his wife Áine every success in France.

Barry plans to continue to play club football and we look forward to him donning the red and yellow of his beloved Mitchels for years to come.
