CLIMATE ACTION AND SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

September 11, 2022

We are delighted to announce that the club’s Climate Action and Sustainability Plan has been ratified by the executive committee. This is a  joint initiative between Mitchels and Mayo GAA County Board.

While the promotion of Gaelic Games is core to what Castlebar Mitchels is about we are also in a unique position to lead in the area of Climate Action and respect for the environment.

The recently adopted “McHale Park Campus GAA Climate Action and Sustainability Strategy” is the result of a collaboration between Castlebar Mitchels and the Mayo County Board. It was developed this year to address the challenges that Castlebar Mitchels and Mayo County Board face in relation to Climate Change which affects our grounds and buildings. This strategy follows the GAA Green Clubs Program which is being led by Croke Park.

In line with the model for Green Clubs pilots to date, a partnership group was formed with the common goal to enhance and develop the combined Campus at McHale Park, in a sustainable way. The development of the strategy was overseen by a Steering Group with representatives from Castlebar Mitchels, Mayo County Board, Connaught GAA, and Croke Park. Five sub-groups of the main Group were set up to cover each thematic areas, Energy, Waste, Water, Biodiversity and Transport. The sub-groups comprised of a Mayo GAA County Board Representative, a Castlebar Mitchels GAA representative and expert partners from the SEAI, the Climate Action Regional Office (CARO), the Regional Waste Management Office, the Local Authority Waters Programme, Mayo County Council and their experts in Waste, Transport & Biodiversity to date have come on board.

Castlebar Mitchels are now looking for club members to participate in the five working groups which are being put in place to deliver on the actions outlined in the strategy covering the areas of Energy, Waste, Water, Biodiversity and Transport. Please take some time to read the strategy and if you would like to contribute to the delivery of the strategy contact the Club Secretary or PRO at the following email addresses; Secretary.castlebarmitchels.mayo@gaa.ie Pro.castlebarmitchels.mayo@gaa.ie . .
